So, what is SSL or HTTPS exactly?

You may have heard the term thrown around online or in business. But seriously, what is SSL?

SSL (Secure Sockets Layer), also known as Hyper Text Transfer Protocol Secure (HTTPS) is the secure version of HTTP, the protocol over which data is sent between your web browser and the website that you are connected to. The ‘S’ at the end of HTTPS stands for ‘Secure’. It means all communications between your browser and the website are encrypted.

In English please…

SSL tells your website users that your website is safe to use on their devices, safe to share payment / private details and also tells Google and other online services that your website is safe. For example, our website has SSL in place so when people go to our website they see the URL as ‘HTTPS://’. Note the ‘Secure’ text in green.

what is SSL

My website is very simple. Do I actually need it?

In the past, only advanced websites with shopping carts required SSL. Now though, as web developers we are seeing more and more ways in which NOT having SSL in place effects your website negatively. Big time! The web is obviously moving into the direction of making HTTPS the preferred, if not the compulsory, protocol.

As of early January 2017:

– Google has officially announced that HTTPS will be a factor for search results (i.e. having SSL will help your natural rankings on Google)

– The use of HTTP/2 protocol, that results in serious loading speed gains, is supported by browsers only over encrypted connection (i.e. only websites using SSL will be able to have seriously fast new loading times of the latest web browsers)

– Google Chrome browser will begin to indicate to users that your website is insecure without SSL in place as of January 2017

– Matt Mullenweg, the founder of WordPress has announced that some of the new WordPress features released in 2017 will be available only for sites using HTTPS (go to 31:00 minute to hear it).

So, does your website need SSL? In the year 2017, yes it does.

SSL is FREE for Humanised Web Hosting Customers

If you host your website with us here at Humanised, we’ll setup your website with SSL for no additional cost. See our other web hosting inclusions on our website page here. For more complex websites with really heavy traffic, a stronger SSL connection may be recommended for you. If you’re not sure what your website needs please email me at and I’ll check out your options.

The good news is that prices for SSL are much more affordable than they once were for the average small business website owner. No matter who your hosting provider is, I can find out prices for you to install SSL.
